The Society of Women Writers WA
June Kingston Smith

June was born in Waterlooville, near Portsmouth, England. She came to WA with her family when she was seven and moved to Perth from Yarloop when she was 15 to start secretarial work. She married her childhood sweetheart, and has two children and three grandchildren, two of whom love to write.

Joining SWWWA in 1986, June served on the committee for many years and, for eight years, wrote the newsletter on her old Imperial typewriter. In 1986, she won the Bronze Quill Award (judged by Tim Winton) for her short story In Another Place, and first prize in the 1996 International Training in Communication competition (for the Australian Pacific Region) for The Diary. She has had stories read on radio; café reviews, short stories, and articles published in the Travel, Habitat and other sections of The West Australian (where she worked as a copytaker for 35 years). She was also runner-up in the 2022 Bronze Quill Award with her short story Through the Window.

She loves writing short stories and her favourite genre is supernatural/fantasy (and maybe romance). She published her first book, Stories from Another Place, which includes her winning Bronze Quill and ITC entries, with Linellen Press, Perth, and has just released her second book, a novel this time. Catching Shadows is a love story set in a small timber town in WA’s south-west in the early 60s, also by the same publishing company. Both books are available on Amazon or from the author.
